Forklift Classification
By motor type
Diesel/petrol forklifts
Due to the exhaust emissions, they are designed to operate predominantly outdoors or in a very well ventilated area for short periods of time.
A diesel forklift is the best option for low temperature operation.
For work on the street, a diesel loader is the best option, since such equipment will not be capricious even in a thirty-degree frost. At the same time, diesel models have high power and high load capacity, but they need constant maintenance and replacement of consumables. They are also quite noisy in operation.
A petrol forklift is practically in no way inferior to a diesel one, except that it is not as economical in terms of fuel consumption and has a lower carrying capacity. There are also hybrid models that can run on petrol and diesel or petrol and gas. The use of gas allows you to save fuel and use the loader in enclosed spaces.
Electric forklifts
In some cases, the use of equipment with a gasoline or diesel engine is undesirable for safety reasons. For example, if loading and unloading operations are carried out in a small enclosed space, container, wagon, workshop, or when working with food products. In such cases, electric forklifts powered by batteries are used. They are the safest and most environmentally friendly, while being quite reliable and picky in maintenance. The charge is usually enough to work 8-12 hours without the need to recharge.
Electric forklifts are divided according to the layout of the undercarriage into three-wheel and four-wheel. In three-wheel, the rear axle consists of one wheel or several, located close to each other. This design allows you to significantly increase the maneuverability of the machine and turn around a smaller radius. However, the lateral stability of such models is reduced, so they are used only in rooms with a flat surface. Four-wheels have no problems with stability, but maneuverability will be lower. But their speed and carrying capacity will be better.
Forklift wheel type
If delicate movement of loads on uneven surfaces is required, then it is better to choose models with pneumatic tires. They provide better cushioning. In all other cases, solid ones will do.
Fork location
They can be located at the front (front loaders) or at the side (semi-rotary). The former are easier to maneuver, while the latter allows you to pick up and place cargo in small spaces.
Load capacity.
According to this indicator, forklifts are:
- light (0.5-2 tons)
- medium (2-4 tons)
- heavy (4-10 tons)
- heavy-duty (over 10 tons)
Electric forklifts are capable of working with a weight of no more than 8.5 tons.
Optional equipment
Forklifts can be used not only with forks, but also with other attachments to expand the functionality and ability to work with different types of cargo. For example, forklifts can be equipped with:
- bale grab – able to grab bales by gripping them from both sides;
- roll gripper – designed to work with rolls, can rotate them 360 degrees;
- barrel grip – allows you to move and rotate barrels;
- fork positioner – allows you to change the distance between the teeth of the forks depending on the dimensions of the pallet;
- forklift sideshifting system - provides movement of the carriage to the right and left horizontally, accurately placing the load, without the need for maneuvering;
- pusher - a special plate that moves the load forward;
- stabilizer - securely fixes the load, preventing falling.
And this is not the whole arsenal of equipment that may be at the disposal of a forklift, which makes it possible to adapt it to work with any type of cargo.
Before buying, we advise you to make a list of requirements for a forklift, carefully study all the offers of sellers available on the Machineryline marketplace and choose the equipment that suits your requirements.
